Batman: The Dark Knight Rises DVD review

I was lucky enough to be sent a little festive parcel from Warner Brothers which included the latest version of Batman on DVD. The Dark Knight Rises is the third in a trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) of Batman movies starring Christian Bale, and is set 8 years after The Dark Knight story.

Many action movies these days are over before you have eaten the first inch of popcorn from the pack. Not so The Dark Knight Rises. It’s a full blooded two and half hours which starts with a brooding Bruce Wayne, broken in body and spirit, and rises to a crescendo of mayhem. I watched it with my twelve year old and we both agreed it would not be suitable for much younger children: there is a considerable amount of violence that goes way beyond the KAPOW that Batman handed out in my youth, and a baddie that really is very creepy looking. However, for older children and adults it’s an absorbing and entertaining movie, with two great twists in the tale.

I would recommend watching the trilogy in sequence. The movie does stand alone but all three are great movies and Christian Bale makes an interesting study of a troubled Batman.

Anne Hathaway

I would be a poor beauty blogger if I didn’t mention the makeup. Anne Hathaway plays a leading role in this movie and her make up artists pull off a magnificent red lipped, powerful look. She looks far from the demure characters she has played in other movies.

You can pick up The Dark Knight Rises from Amazon on DVD for a tenner, which includes a digital copy for download or streaming. I was provided this DVD as a gift, but the opinions are my own and it would have made it under my tree in any case. Recommended.

The Doctor Who Experience and pre-teens

Firstly, allow me to apologise for the use of the appalling term pre-teen. If you know of a better way of describing someone who doesn’t have teen in their age but can still roll their eyes like a professional, let me know in the comments.

I recently took two of the afore-mentioned pre-teens to the Doctor Who Experience in London.
In case you have not come across it before, it’s been set up the by the BBC and is running until the Autumn. It’s hard to describe, really – it’s a mix of sets from the show, visual effects and museum. You spend some time walking into sets (for example, you are standing in the Tardis at one point) with very clever visual effects and some interaction. That takes about 30 minutes or so and you are led in groups by a guide, so there is no lingering. You then exit into a museum area where you can look at all sorts of costumes, props and monsters, mainly from the last few series but also from the series you might remember from your own childhood. It’s been well done and what’s there is very good quality. Some of the visual effects are quite startling – younger children might be a bit frightened.

The website tells you that you should allow an hour and half – I think that’s a bit generous unless your child wants to spend a really long time in the museum area or the adjoining retail opportunity where you can buy a set of Doctor dolls for a bargainous fifty quid. (There were cheaper items on sale too).

The verdict from the pre-teens was that it was good, but didn’t blow them away. We were in and out in 60 minutes, and the total cost including booking fees for one adult and two eye rolling children was £45. I’m not sure that represented fantastic value for money – my advice for older children would be don’t go to London for just that – plan something else as well.

The highlight for all of us was walking out of the experience and seeing a little lad, maybe 5 or 6 years of age, trotting towards us in full Matt Smith Doctor regalia – bow tie and all – whilst clutching a sonic screwdriver. Bless him. He made my day. I hope he had a great time.

Travel info: it’s on at Olympia, which is on a sub branch of the District line that you can only access from High Street Ken or Earl’s Court. The train is infrequent: 2 – 3 times an hour so factor that in to your journey time. There is a Pizza Express at Olympia, don’t forget to download whatever the current voucher is.

Transformers 3: Dark of The Moon Q+A

So there’s a new Transformers movie out then?

Yup. It’s the third in the Michael Bay franchise, and it’s called Dark of the Moon.

Dark of the Moon? Is that grammatically correct?

I sincerely doubt it.

So it’s starring Shia La Beouf and the impossibly thin brunette like the first two?

Half right. Shia La Beouf is still in it, but the impossibly thin brunette was allegedly fired for making inappropriate comments. She’s been replaced by an impossibly thin blonde with massive lips.

So is there lots of blowing things up, lorries transforming into robots and massive destruction accompanied by sweeping orchestral music?

Wow. It’s almost like you’ve seen it already.

Does the impossibly thin blonde find herself in mortal peril and scream quite a lot?

Are you sure you haven’t seen it?

Will my eleven year old son like it?

He’ll love it. He is the target market.

Will my husband / life partner / hero of my waking hours like it?

If he likes impossibly thin blondes or robots he will be quids in.

Will I like it?

Er…. well, there is Josh Duhamel to look at. And you can get a Kindle with a light these days. And Minstrels aways taste nice.

What’s the plot then?

There are goodie robots and baddie robots. I don’t want to spoil it, but that Moon landing wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. There may be more, but best ask the eleven year old for further details.

Wet day summer holiday option then?

Indeed. Enjoy. Pack Minstrels.
