Jo Malone Plum Blossom

Jo Malone Plum Blossom

My final stop on my recent trip to London was the Jo Malone counter in John Lewis Oxford Street. This is a spanking brand new counter in the spanking brand new Beauty Hall, and very nicely done. The staff were lovely, as I’ve always found Jo Malone’s staff to be, and I had a nice mooch round. The main purpose in going was to restock on my summer staple fragrance, Lime, Basil and Mandarin. Whenever the sun is at full strength this is what I reach for. There’s something about it which makes me feel cooler, even if just for a minute.

Whilst at the counter, I got sucked into trying the newest Limited Edition, Plum Blossom. I have to be really careful with Jo Malone – some that I have bought in the past I have found to be quite brutal smelling on me – but this one is proving to be a winner. JM are offering Plum Blossom in two sizes, so I erred on the side of caution and went for the smaller.

Jo Malone describe Plum Blossom as “Inspired by cerise, Plum Blossom opens with the fruitful freshness of yellow plum, its floral heart blooms on a background of creamy sandalwood and clean, white musk.” The plum goes quickly on me, and it soon dries down into a really pretty floral. I knew I’d like the base notes, which I do, and I have really enjoyed wearing this. I haven’t started combining it with the rest of my Jo Malone’s but that’s next on the agenda. A definite Spring fragrance and a really nice addition to my collection.

I love my Jurlique night cream and this is a decent discount – worth a shot if you fancy trying this Aussie brand.

Burberry Beauty – Lip Cover and Sheer Summer Glow

My main purchases

I headed to John Lewis Oxford Street with one main aim – my first visit to a Burberry Beauty counter. I can honestly say I have never met a Sales Assistant / MUA as enthusiastic as the one manning the counter when I was there. He told me that he truly loved working there because every single product was fantastic.

Lip Cover in English Rose

Well, I can’t say that I tried every single product, but what I did try was lovely, and I came away with 2 purchases. I asked the SA to find me a really lovely everyday lip colour, something very natural. He came up with the Lip Cover in English Rose. I love it. It is me, but better. The attention to detail on these products is incredible. The casing has the Burberry check as does the lipstick itself. The lid clicks back on with a magnet, which is stupidly satisfying. On application it is weightless. Possibly the best formulation I have ever tried and I have a horrible feeling it may have ruined me for all other lipsticks. Sigh.

Sheer Summer Glow powder

The second product I bought was the Sheer Summer Glow powder. A palette of four colours, the SA walked me through the multiple uses. You can sweep a brush over the lot for a subtle bronze, use the darker colours as a contouring bronzer, use the pink and cream as highlighters and finally use the colours as eyeshadows too. Again, the same attention to detail with the check on the pouch, case and powder. I’ve not tried this too extensively yet but look forward to playing with this one.

The SA was pushing the Sheer Concealer hard – it comes in a tube like YSL Touche Eclat, and he used it as a highlighter and also as a base for my lips. I didn’t buy as I have the ByTerry Touche Veloutée already, but it looked like a nice product.

He was very generous with samples. A mini lip cover in Rosewood, two palettes of lip colours – with teeny tiny brushes! teeny tiny brushes! – and Burberry Body perfume. I am very very impressed. This will not be my last visit to Burberry, I confidently predict.

John Lewis Oxford Street – new Beauty Hall

This was opened to great fanfare on May 8th and I managed to get down there last week for a look see. It’s stunning, with 4 rounded counters in the centre selling a variety of brands and then the brands all round the edge on their custom designed counters. Highlights include a gorgeous Jo Malone counter, where I found fantastically helpful staff, a giant wall of OPI nail varnish and the only Burberry counter in the West End with the most enthusiastic SA ever. I didn’t get a good look at Chanel but apparently there is an interactive section to it.

John Lewis have spent £8m quid to revamp 18,000 square feet of beauty playground. I never thought anything would drag me away from Selfridges but this place is seriously, seriously good.

Purchase reviews from Burberry and Jo Malone coming up. They’ve been sitting in bags waiting for me to photo and blog them, in a miraculous display of self restraint from me. I shall reward myself with a large glass of wine and stroke the bags instead.

Chantecaille Event at Space.NK

Chantecaille haul

I recently attended a Chantecaille event at Space.NK’s Cheapside branch, so thought I would blog about my mini haul and gift. It was the usual deal – a £30 booking fee, redeemable against purchase and a little present at the till.

I cannot recommend Cheapside branch highly enough. The staff were absolutely fantastic. Anyone that is offering me champagne at 11 in the morning can’t be rated highly enough in my opinion (no, I didn’t – that’s too early even for me).

The staff introduced me to Greg, who is Chantecaille’s Head of Education. He’d flown in for a week from the States and was touring Space.NK’s stores. Despite the fact that this was his last stop he was full of enthusiasm and a real pleasure to meet. I asked him a little about the brand, which is reasonably new to me. He explained that it was founded by Sophie Chantecaille, who previously worked on Prescriptives. As her name she suggests she is French, but the family are now based in New York.

Greg firstly cleansed my face and used various skin care products. He told me that their skin care is all about reducing inflammation, and they focus heavily on botanicals, for example using rose water instead of water. You can definitely smell the rose water for some time after the product is applied so if you don’t like roses this might not be the brand for you. I thought the products smelt and felt lovely, but I would need to test them over a longer time period to see how they held up before recommending. The one product that I might be interested in is the Ultra Sun Protection which has an SPF of factor 50 and can be used as a primer, which would be great for Summer.

Greg then applied the foundation, which he told me gave a flawless finish and is often used for photo shoots for a natural effect. He used a smaller brush than certainly I would use for foundation, explaining that he liked a really precise application but only where it was needed.

Greg then handed over to Chantecaille make up artist John, who carried on with colour. We discussed the look that I wanted. I was off to an event the following day, and had my nails done in coral in preparation for that, so we decided to stick with the coral theme. John used a little concealer under my eyes, and used foundation across the eyelids as a base. Then he applied Lasting eye shadow in Coriander right across the lid. The Stylo eyeliner in black was applied right along the top lash line, and John then lined top and bottom lids in Lasting eye shadow in Smokey Topaz. John blended this to give a slightly smoky eye and told me that he prefers not to line the entire lower lash line, but just the outer centimetre. He applied mascara, which I was slightly nervous about as most non tubing mascaras really irritate me. This one was absolutely fine, so no problems there.

We finished off with some loose powder, blusher and a lip chic lipstick in Sunrise.

So, having done all of that, what was I tempted to buy? The photo above shows what I went for. The loose powder was a recommendation from a friend, so I went for that. I also picked up the Lip Chic lipstick and co-ordinating liner in Coral and the two eyeshadows in Coriander and Smokey Topaz.

The skin care was lovely but I am happy with my current regime, and well stocked on that front so resisted any purchase there. I wouldn’t buy the foundation. Although the effect once applied was lovely, and I was advised it was suitable for all skin types, I was very very oily within an hour on my T zone. The other issue for me with this foundation was that I could see it sitting in the pores round my nose and on my chin. The mascara was fine but I will stick with my Estee Lauder Double Wear.

The free gift was a full size eye shadow in Crystal and a couple of samples of cleanser and a mask in a cute blue bag. I thought it was a really nice gift.

All in all, a lovely hour long treat and I would recommend you giving it a go if Space.NK run the event again.

A beauty day out in London

The Mothership (© John Lewis)

I’ve had a fantastic day, starting with a Chantecaille event at SpaceNK Cheapside. The very lovely Greg and John from Chantecaille looked after me brilliantly and I cannot fault a SpaceNK team that were offering me champagne at 11 in the morning. I’ll pop up a couple of blog posts next week about the look that they concocted for me, and which goodies fell into my basket and made it to the till.

If you are in Central London at all over the coming weeks and months, you absolutely must visit the new Beauty Hall at John Lewis Oxford Street, aka the Mothership. Holy mascara, it is amazing. Pretty much everything you can think of including the only Burberry outlet in the West End. Something from there may have fallen into my basket too. And something from Jo Malone (it would have been rude not to). I’ll get those purchases up on the blog next week as well.

A good day’s work all round then, and lots to try next week. I can’t wait.

Shellac nails in Tropics

I’m quite happy painting my own nails but I am a bit cackhanded at it. As I am off to an event on Saturday, I got the pros to do it instead. And if I am getting a pro in, I want the paint job to last. This is Shellac, the paint on UV gel system, in Tropics. I’ve read other reports on Shellac where people have been complaining that their varnish has lifted very quickly. I’ve never had that with mine, which have lasted until they have grown out so much that they start looking daft.

ByTerry Touche Veloutée

By Terry Touche Veloutée

This was a strong recommendation from a friend to nuke my under eye circles, and it’s turned out to be a complete winner. I had used YSL’s Touche Eclat on and off for years, but it never really seemed to do the trick. The advice given to me was to try ByTerry’s Touche Veloutée over concealer. I am using NARS concealer first, then I dot the Touche Veloutée over and pat in. I have the TV in Cream, which is distinctly yellow toned and the combination of the NARS concealer and the TV works wonders. As well as highlighting and covering, the TV also plumps the area where it applies, and I have had no problems with creasing at all.

It’s not cheap – it’s only available from Space NK and retails at £35.00 but I think it holds a greater volume than the Touche Eclat which comes in at £25 ish.

Clinique High Impact Lipstick in Rosette

You have free mail

There I was, minding my own business, when a Boots leaflet dropped through the door offering me a free Clinique lipstick. Never one to look a free lipstick in the mouth, I popped into Boots and was offered a choice of two, of which I selected Rosette. I was interested to know why my name had popped up on the Advantage Card database for the offer but the Clinique SA could offer no more information than a shrug. And to my astonishment, she made zero attempt to sell me anything else, not even asking if there was anything else I was interested in. Which I would have thought was the point of getting me to the counter in the first place really.

So here it is – it’s described as a golden rose, with medium to full coverage and I’d go with that. The packaging is obviously not as nice as the paid-for version, but hey, it’s free. It’s filed and will not doubt get a good few outings over Spring and Summer.

La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution

La Roche Posay solution

I wouldn’t describe myself as a flannel obsessive but I like a good Hot Cloth Cleanse in the evening as much as the next person. There is a feeling of almost ritual when you warm the flannel and put it over your face. I use Dermalogica’s Ultra Calming Cleanser and it makes taking my make up off something that I almost look forward to.

In the mornings, though, I really want something a little more refreshing so I decided to give the snappily titled La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution a go. My well developed cynical streak did cause me to doubt if I had just paid north of a tenner for what was essentially a bottle of Volvic, that could probably be bought in a French pharmacie for fivepence, but my beauty hoarding streak soon shouted that thought down and Boots’ tills were a tenner plus up.

I really like this. The best way I can describe it is as “soft water”. It doesn’t feel greasy at all, but neither does it feel like you are just wiping plain wet cotton wool over your face. I haven’t tried it on full make up, but it removed tinted moisturiser and lippie with no problems. I shall pile on through the bottle and I can see this one being bought again. Unless I happen to be in a French pharmacie and see Bioderma for fivepence.
